One of the greatest fears for most people is speaking in public; some would rather die than take on this task. Why is it that they would rather be in a coffin then giving a speech?
It is from the FEAR of exposure....that creates the opportunity for others to criticise us... We become experts at disappearing..

The reason we become experts at disappearing is that we are then in our own comfort zone. (It doesn't do any such thing - it decreases discomfort)

It also puts another brick in the circular wall we build to protect ourselves.

So what do we need to do?

The very thing that we don't.
Face the fact that the longest form of the pain is to continue with the strategy designed to make it all go "Away"- for the moment.
